How it Works

All students can benefit from tutoring. Every student has a unique situation and individual needs. Increased class sizes in high school and college make it difficult for students to get all of their needs met by the teacher. Some students may be behind in a class and will need more intensive tutoring to catch up. Others may benefit from having a place to review homework and concepts on a weekly basis throughout the course. Whether you are failing the class and are hoping to pass, or are striving for the A, I can help you achieve your goal.

What can you expect in the first math session?

During our first meeting, we assess your tutoring needs. To get the most from tutoring, ongoing sessions are best. We will discuss how you are doing in the class and decide what will best meet your needs. Bringing a recent test or current homework assignment to your first session will give us a good place to start.

Testimonials

"Throughout her help with my trigonometry course, I felt assured by Diana's knowledge of the subject and ability to teach it effectively. This led to a new-found confidence in the subject and — ultimately — a satisfying grade!"

"My name is Austin. I am a 21 year old student at the University of Washington. At the time that I sought out tutoring I was enrolled in a pre-calculus class at my local community college. I will be the first to admit that I am not the most mathematically inclined individual and found that as new material was presented throughout the course it got more and more difficult for me to keep up. This was due to the fact that, in math, if you do not establish a solid foundation and understanding of the original concepts presented, it will be extremely difficult – if not impossible – to build upon. That said, I think the classroom setting has a lot to offer in terms of getting information out to large numbers of people, but one of its greatest downfalls, in my opinion, is in its ability to accommodate various different learning styles. Everyone has their own unique way of digesting information and it is not uncommon to find yourself in a situation where the teaching style is incongruent with your style of learning. This is where tutoring becomes useful, if not necessary. For me, I was lucky enough to have worked with Diana Gibson. What struck me the most was her ability to identify my learning style almost instantly and to then work within those parameters to help assist me in accomplishing my goals. This was especially impressive taking into consideration that our tutoring sessions were facilitated via telephone conversations. Between her wealth of knowledge, willingness to listen and overall patience with me, I was able to not only grasp the concepts that were giving me difficulty, but also achieve a grade that I otherwise would have not been able to get close to. It’s Diana’s dedication that sets her apart. Her enthusiasm and love for teaching is apparent from the moment you meet her and is a continuous source of inspiration and empowerment throughout the tutoring sessions. As a student who has faced the struggles of falling behind in class I can honestly say that tutoring makes a huge difference. And with that said, whether you find yourself having difficulty with just a few specific concepts here and there or whether you feel that as a whole you are falling further and further behind, I would recommend with my highest level of confidence Diana Gibson as your choice in tutor."

"I remember feeling really nervous about a big test I needed to take to be a teacher. I’d had the required math courses in high school and college, but as an English major, it wasn’t much! It had also been several years since I’d taken those math classes. I asked Diana for help. I knew she taught math at the high school and that she’d graduated college with a math degree, so I was convinced she could help me prepare for my test. She was wonderful! She really help me understand not only how to do the problems, but to think about how numbers related to each other. She was patient with me and guided me through what I needed to master. On the day of the test, I felt confident in my abilities. The math on my test seemed easy after Diana’s tutelage. When the test results came in the mail, I was shocked to find that not only had I passed the test, but I’d scored better in the math portion than any other on the test! Thank-you, Diana, for your confidence in me and your help!"

"I am someone who hates math and have always had a very difficult time learning it. Diana was able to tutor me despite the fact that I tend to get frustrated, cry, and throw things…eventually giving up. Diana never let me give up, and she was able to help me understand the math I was working on through patience and a genuine knowledge of how to teach people. Diana gave me the tools and taught me the skills that I would need in order to be successful in my math courses."
